For four decades Marin Community Clinics has provided quality primary care to uninsured residents living in Marin County, located north of San Francisco.1972: First known as Medical Contact Service of Marin, the organization began as a FREE CLINIC in the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Mill Valley. Throughout the 1970s caring and skilled volunteer doctors and nurses cared for poor residents in evening clinics in several churches across Marin. Early 1980s: The name was changed to Community Health Center of Marin and the organization joined the growing national system of COMMUNITY CLINICS – not free, but dedicated to serving low-income and uninsured populations who are covered under Medi-Cal and other publicly funded programs, or who pay for services on a sliding scale based on income and family size. 1987: At the time of its 15th anniversary, the organization changed its name to Marin Community Clinic. A highly skilled medical team was hired to replace the large volunteer staff for more consistency in hours of operation and quality monitoring. 1991: The need for a stable location and presence in the community was recognized by many in Marin. In collaboration with many organizations including the Marin Healthcare District and County of Marin, MCC established a clinic in Greenbrae in “temporary” trailers on the campus of Marin General Hospital; this site is still in use today. More than 5,400 patient visits were provided in that first year 1993: Marin Community Clinic became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). That designation means that in exchange for substantial federal government funding to cover uninsured patients, the clinic agrees to follow strict quality and management guidelines and to ensure that primary health care is always available to anyone who needs it. 2001: A second clinic in Novato was opened to serve patients in northern Marin. 2007: Marin Community Clinic was renamed Marin Community Clinics to reflect multiple sites. Patient services reached approximately 16,000 patients with nearly 50,000 patient visits — a nine-fold increase since its founding. 2008: Due to growing community need, Marin Community Clinics expanded its capacity to serve more patients by opening a third clinic in San Rafael, and for the first time offered dental services in addition to adult and pediatric primary care. 2009: The Novato clinic was relocated to a larger, more modern, and more accessible site, along with Administrative offices. 2010: A second dental clinic was opened, adjacent to the medical clinic in Novato, doubling capacity for oral health services. Patient services for medical and dental combined reached 29,000 patients through almost 100,000 visits. 2011: Obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) services were transferred from the County Health and Human Services Department to Marin Community Clinics, and an innovative collaboration with Prima Medical Foundation and Marin General Hospital was crafted to provide excellent continuity of care between the prenatal and labor and delivery settings for all Marin County families. To provide OB/GYN services, our fourth medical clinic was opened at the County’s Health and Wellness Campus. |
