Spotlight on Community Champions

As a nonprofit safety net healthcare provider, Marin Community Clinics is dependent on volunteers, donors, partner agencies, and other supporters – our Champions. With the ongoing and generous support of Marin residents, businesses, foundations, and health professionals, we are able to maintain and expand our essential services. The incredible success of our 2007-2008 Building a Healthy Future capital campaign, which resulted in new state-of-the-art clinic facilities in San Rafael and Novato, is a testament to the foresight and generosity of our community.

This page will provide a rotating spotlight on some of Marin Community Clinics’ most valued contributors.

LeslieCunningham

Leslie Cunningham, PT

Leslie Cunningham has made a career of volunteering, giving her time and expertise to her community without hesitation for most of her life. In addition to providing physical therapy to Marin Community Clinics’ patients on a regular basis since 2005, she has volunteered in her two daughters’ schools and sports teams until they were grown, and then continued to volunteer as a tutor through the Marin County School Volunteers program. For her boundless energy and enthusiasm and volunteer spirit, Leslie was selected as Larkspur’s Citizen of the Year for 2013.

With an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from UCLA, and a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Stanford University, Leslie gained valuable experience working with head injuries, spinal cord injuries and stroke patients at Davies Acute Rehab Center in San Francisco, as well as caring for patients at UCSF Medical Center. She went on to work for 10 years in home care in San Francisco and Marin before shifting much of her time to our clinics.

Originally from San Diego, Leslie has lived with her husband in Larkspur for 36 years. They have been long-term donors to Marin Community Clinics. In her never-ending generous spirit, Leslie suggested that her friends donate to the Clinics instead of giving her birthday presents at her birthday bash a few years ago, and many of her friends donated in her honor. Those gifts speak volumes about how she is esteemed in her community.

JosephGreenberg

Joseph Greenberg, MD

Dr. Joseph Greenberg has been a volunteer, adviser, and supporter of Marin Community Clinics since 1974 when it was a free clinic operating in various church basements in Mill Valley and Fairfax. His rare combination of expertise – Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Dermatology – made him a valuable asset to our patients in those early days. When the free clinic transitioned to a community health center with paid staff in the 1980s, he stepped back from volunteering to concentrate on his private dermatology practice.

Originally from Minneapolis, he completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Minnesota, and followed it up with training at Army hospitals – Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, and Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.  When a research opportunity took him to Letterman Hospital in San Francisco, he knew his heart would stay in the Bay Area. He has lived and worked in Marin County ever since.

Dr. Greenberg stays close to our mission by advising our Novato Medical Director Erik Schten, MD on dermatology related issues. In fact, Dr. Greenberg’s practice is a family affair that includes his wife Liz, his daughter Cindy Greenberg, MD, and her husband Dr. Schten. Dr. Greenberg has been a long-time donor to Marin Community Clinics, as well as contributing his talents to the Novato Human Needs Center. He periodically holds a free dermatology clinic at his office where he asks patients to donate what they can to defray costs, and those donations go directly to Marin Community Clinics. A very creative contribution!
